Inspectors

Who inspects in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is our home base. Clear To Load was founded in 2017 and is led by Yogesh Raygoor, founder and lead inspector. Inspectors based in the city cover Jodhpur factories without a travel fee, and travel from here to Barmer and Udaipur.

Every report is reviewed by a supervisor before release and goes to the buyer only.

Where we inspect

Jodhpur's industrial areas: Basni, Boranada and Sangariya

Jodhpur is on the Government of India's list of Towns of Export Excellence for handicraft (DGFT Appendix 1B), and an EPCH bulletin from 2018 records that the government declared it a mega cluster of wooden handicrafts.

AreaHow we plan an inspection there
BasniOur office is in M.I.A. 1st Phase, Basni, so factories here are the shortest trip for our inspectors. Notice: same day when an inspector is free, otherwise 1–2 working days.
BoranadaTell us where each part of the order is made and where it is packed. If carving, ironwork or finishing is done in another unit, we can add a visit there.
SangariyaWhen two factories are close together and each lot is small, one man-day can sometimes cover both. We confirm the man-days when you book.
Band A applies across Jodhpur: no travel fee in any of these areas.

Many Jodhpur orders are split between units: a carpentry workshop, an iron welder, a finishing shed and an export house that packs. Defects are cheapest to fix where they start, so for a large order we plan the inspection around where the goods are packed and, if you ask, add a visit to the workshop that makes the problem part. When the factory stuffs the container itself, container loading supervision checks carton counts, stacking and the seal.

The market

Jodhpur's export trade in 2025 and 2026

Exporters told ETV Bharat in December 2025 that Jodhpur ships handicrafts worth about ₹4,500 crore a year, mostly furniture and décor. The same report gave the effect of the 2025 US tariff rise: containers shipped from Jodhpur fell from 21,053 in August–November 2024 to 12,579 in the same months of 2025.

Europe is the second pressure. The EU Deforestation Regulation asks the importer for the geolocation and legality of the timber in wooden furniture. ETV Bharat reported that EU buyers had already started asking Jodhpur exporters for those documents. At the factory we can check that timber purchase records exist for your order and match the goods; see the EUDR guide.

For buyers, a weaker order book can mean factories taking orders they have not made before, new workshops in the supply chain and pressure on drying time. Those are the conditions in which an early inspection pays for itself.

From our inspections

Common defects we find in Jodhpur

From four of our Jodhpur inspections, published as anonymised sample reports (November 2022 to January 2023, 1317 pieces across 39 styles):

  • Cracks in solid wood and marble tops, and cracks filled badly enough to show. These were the main reason a 661-piece lot was not cleared (Sample 04).
  • A tip-over hazard: a five-drawer cabinet that tipped forward with every drawer open, a critical defect that fails the lot on its own (Sample 05).
  • Variation within a style: nesting tables in two sizes and visibly different colours in the same order.
  • Ironwork finish: scratches, uneven frames and rough welds on wood-and-iron pieces.
  • Electrical fittings: a bar cabinet whose light fitting was wrong on every unit, opened and corrected on site (Sample 06).
  • Workmanship marks: grinding marks and visible nails, usually minor (Sample 01).
Major defect: crack in a black marble table top, marked in chalk

Buyer tips

  • Agree a written tolerance for natural colour and grain variation before production.
  • Set a moisture-content target suited to your market's climate and put it in the purchase order. Our default reference is typically 8–11%, set by the destination's climate (our default limit is 11%).
  • Plan ready dates around Diwali closures and allow drying time after the monsoon.
  • For EU and US shipments, ask for timber purchase records and species details early; they are needed for EUDR and the Lacey Act.
  • For chests and tall cabinets going to the US, check the STURDY Act labels and tip restraint before packing, not at loading.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an inspection in Jodhpur cost?

US$249 per man-day, with no travel fee because Jodhpur is Band A. One man-day is one inspector at one factory for 8 hours, report included. A reinspection after rework is US$149 per visit.

Can you reach small workshops in Boranada and around Jodhpur?

Yes. Inspectors visit workshops and finishing units as well as the main factory, which matters when carving, ironwork, finishing or packing is subcontracted.

How does the monsoon affect Jodhpur furniture?

Jodhpur is dry for most of the year, but humidity rises during the monsoon and in storage. Timber and finished pieces can pick up moisture, so we measure moisture content at inspection and check how goods are stored before loading.

When do Jodhpur factories close for festivals?

Many factories slow down or close for several days around Diwali. Plan inspections and ready dates around it; we can advise on timing when you book.

Can you inspect at several Jodhpur factories in one day?

Often, if the factories are close together and each lot is small. We confirm the number of man-days when you book.

Do you check reclaimed-wood furniture?

Yes. Reclaimed wood needs checks for nails and metal fragments, insect damage, moisture and finish consistency. For EU shipments, products made entirely from recycled wood are outside the EUDR, but mixed products are not.
