What is made in Barmer
Two official listings describe Barmer's export work. Appendix 1B of the Foreign Trade Policy lists Barmer as a Town of Export Excellence for handicrafts, alongside Jodhpur and Jaipur in Rajasthan. The national ODOP list is more specific: for Barmer district it names textile-based handicrafts (and, for agriculture, cumin).
Textile-based handicrafts cover goods where the craft is worked on cloth: hand embroidery, appliqué (shapes of cloth cut and stitched onto a base), mirror work and hand-printed fabric, made up into cushion covers, quilts, throws, wall hangings, table linen and bags. Work like this is often done by hand by many artisans and then collected, finished and packed by one supplier, so variation between pieces is normal and needs a written tolerance.
| Technique | Typical products | Key inspection points |
|---|---|---|
| Hand embroidery and mirror work | Cushion covers, wall hangings, bags | Stitch density, mirror fixing and edges, thread shade, tracing marks |
| Appliqué | Quilts, bedspreads, throws, wall hangings | Edge turning and fraying, motif placement, size after stitching |
| Hand-printed fabric | Cushions, table linen, quilts | Print registration, dye bleeding, shade between batches |

Common defects in textile handicrafts
| Defect | Typical class | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Needle or pin left in the goods | Critical | Injury to the user; many retailers require a needle-control policy |
| Mirror with a sharp or broken edge, or loose beads on goods for children | Critical | Cuts and choking risk |
| Dye bleeding onto white ground on a wet rub | Major | Colours run at the first wash |
| Appliqué edges fraying or lifting | Major | Comes apart in use or washing |
| Size outside tolerance after stitching or washing | Major | Covers will not fit inserts; quilts will not fit beds |
| Wrong or missing fibre and care labels | Major | Breaks textile labelling rules in the destination market |
| Visible tracing marks, small stains or loose thread ends | Minor | Appearance; usually reworked before packing |
Timing and logistics
Barmer is outside our inspector base cities. An inspector travels from Jodhpur, about 200 km away by road, and travel is charged at actual cost. Give us up to 5 working days' notice. If your supplier finishes and packs in Jodhpur, the inspection can take place there with no travel fee.
- Hand work from many artisans: a during-production inspection when the first pieces come back from the artisans shows shade, size and stitch problems before the whole lot is made.
- Washing and drying: washed textiles must be fully dry before packing. We check for damp or musty smells in cartons and polybags.
- Summer heat and dust: dust settles on stored goods in the hot months. Ask for goods to be bagged as soon as they are finished; we check storage on the day.
