India's furniture clusters, and what an inspection there costs
Most export furniture from India comes from a handful of towns. Each has its own materials and its own typical faults. The travel band sets the travel fee; the inspection fee is US$249 per man-day everywhere.
| Cluster | What is made there | Context | Travel band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jodhpur, Rajasthan | Solid sheesham, mango and acacia furniture; iron and mixed-material pieces; reclaimed wood | Town of Export Excellence for handicrafts (DGFT); declared a mega cluster of wooden handicrafts (EPCH, 2018) | Band A |
| Jaipur, Rajasthan | Painted and carved furniture, mirrors and cabinets, wood and stone décor | Town of Export Excellence for handicrafts (DGFT) | Band B |
| Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh | Hand-carved sheesham furniture, jaali screens, boxes | Saharanpur Wood Craft, registered GI (certificate 31 Mar 2014); Town of Export Excellence for handicrafts (DGFT) | Band B |
| Delhi NCR, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh | Export-house furniture, metal and mixed-material pieces, upholstery | Furniture and décor buyers meet suppliers at the IHGF Delhi Fair, Greater Noida | Band B |
| Udaipur, Rajasthan | Bone inlay furniture, marble and stone tops | Inspectors travel from Jodhpur | Band C |
| Kishangarh, Rajasthan | Marble and granite slabs for table tops and stone-top furniture | Inspectors travel from Jaipur | Band C |
| Jagadhri and Yamunanagar, Haryana | Plywood and particle board used in panel furniture | Inspectors travel from Saharanpur | Band C |
| Agartala, Tripura | Bamboo and cane furniture | Town of Export Excellence for bamboo and cane (DGFT) | Band C |
Jodhpur is the largest of these for solid-wood and iron furniture. Exporters told ETV Bharat that the city ships handicrafts worth about ₹4,500 crore a year, and that containers shipped from Jodhpur fell from 21,053 in August–November 2024 to 12,579 in the same months of 2025 after the US tariff rise (ETV Bharat, 1 Dec 2025). Many Jodhpur orders are split between a carpentry unit, an iron workshop and a finishing or packing unit, so the inspection is planned around where the goods are packed. Any other town in India is covered too; check travel and notice on the coverage page.
Furniture inspection prices in India
One man-day is one inspector at one factory for one working day of 8 hours, with the report included. As a guide, one man-day covers one factory and up to 3 furniture styles at General Level II, or up to 5 styles of smaller décor, textile or kitchen items. Large lots, many styles or full assembly and function tests can need more.
| Band | Where | Travel fee | Notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Jodhpur | No travel fee | Same day when an inspector is free, otherwise 1–2 working days |
| B | Jaipur, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Delhi NCR or Kolkata, where our other inspectors are based | US$99 per man-day | Same day to 3 working days, depending on the city |
| C | Anywhere else in India | Actual travel cost, quoted before you book | Up to 5 working days, depending on distance |
- A one-day inspection in Jodhpur (Band A): US$249, nothing else. Same day when an inspector is free, otherwise 1–2 working days.
- A two-man-day inspection in Jaipur or Saharanpur (Band B): 2 × US$249 + 2 × US$99 travel = US$696.
- A factory in Udaipur, Agartala or anywhere else (Band C): US$249 per man-day plus the actual travel cost, which we quote before you book. Up to 5 working days, depending on distance.
- Reinspection after rework: US$149 per visit, plus travel by band. Factory audit: US$449 per audit day. Lab testing coordination: US$99 per order, with lab fees billed at cost with the lab's invoice attached, or paid by you directly to the lab.
The fee is fixed when you book and does not change with the result. Full details are on the pricing page, and the man-day glossary entry explains how days are counted.
What goes wrong with furniture made in India
Most problems with Indian furniture are not visible on the day it ships. They show up weeks later in a drier, heated home.
Moisture
Timber that is not dried to the right moisture content cracks, warps and loosens joints after arrival. Monsoon humidity makes this worse. We measure moisture on stock and finished pieces, against a target in your purchase order.
Hand finishing
Hand-applied finishes vary between batches and units. We check colour and sheen against your approved sample and agree a tolerance for natural variation before production.
Species and materials
Sheesham, mango, acacia and reclaimed wood can be mixed or substituted, and plywood or MDF components may not be declared. This matters for EUDR, the Lacey Act and TSCA Title VI.
Timing matters too. Many factories slow down or close for several days around Diwali, and ready dates slip when timber arrives late. Book a pre-production inspection to measure timber moisture before cutting, a during-production inspection when 20–60% of the order is complete, and a pre-shipment inspection when at least 80% is packed.
What our furniture inspections in India have found
Six real inspections from Jodhpur and Jaipur, published as anonymised sample reports: 1,657 pieces across 49 styles, with 266 pieces inspected.
| Report | Products | Key finding | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sample 01, Jodhpur, November 2022 | Solid wood and woven-panel furniture (181 pieces) | Grinding marks and visible nails, both minor | Cleared to load |
| Sample 02, Jaipur, December 2022 | Mirrors, cabinets and occasional furniture (300 pieces) | Paint tears and an uneven finish, both minor | Cleared to load |
| Sample 03, Jaipur, January 2023 | Solid wood dining tables (40 pieces) | An end crack and visible epoxy filling on oval table tops | Not cleared |
| Sample 04, Jodhpur, January 2023 | Wood, iron and marble furniture (661 pieces) | Cracks in wood and marble tops, badly filled cracks, scratched iron frames | Not cleared |
| Sample 05, Jodhpur, January 2023 | Mango wood and reclaimed-wood furniture (465 pieces) | A five-drawer cabinet that tips forward with every drawer open (critical) | Not cleared |
| Sample 06, Jodhpur, January 2023 | Steel and wood bar cabinet with lighting (10 pieces) | A light fitting wired wrongly; every unit opened and corrected on site | Hold |
The pattern is consistent. Cracks in solid wood and marble, and cracks filled badly enough to show, are the most common major defects. Iron frames arrive scratched or uneven. Style-to-style variation in size and colour turns up in nesting and set pieces. Tip-over is rare but critical: one unstable chest fails the whole lot on its own.

For EU and US orders, ask the factory early for timber purchase records and species details: Jodhpur exporters told ETV Bharat in December 2025 that EU buyers had already started asking for them.
What a furniture report looks like
AQL results for each defect class, moisture readings, measurements, drop test, and photos of every defect, with the verdict on the first line.
Verdicts are Cleared to load, Hold or Not cleared. Every report is reviewed by a supervisor before release and goes to the buyer only.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a furniture inspection in India cost?
US$249 per man-day: one inspector, one factory, one working day of 8 hours, report included. Jodhpur has no travel fee. Jaipur, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Delhi NCR and Kolkata add US$99 per man-day. Elsewhere we quote the actual travel cost before you book. A reinspection after rework is US$149 per visit, plus travel by band.
How many furniture styles fit in one man-day?
As a guide, one man-day covers one factory and up to 3 furniture styles at General Level II, or up to 5 styles of smaller décor, textile or kitchen items. Large lots, many styles or full assembly and function tests can need more.
What moisture content do you accept for sheesham and mango wood?
We measure against the target you set for your market and climate. Our default reference is typically 8–11%, set by the destination's climate (our default limit is 11%).
Do you check STURDY Act warning labels and tip restraints?
Yes. For clothing storage units sold in the US we check the permanent warning label, the hang tag, that a tip restraint is supplied, and that the test report you hold matches the model. Stability testing itself is done by an accredited lab.
Can you help with EUDR for furniture going to the EU?
We can collect and check the timber purchase records, species and origin documents a factory holds, and record them in the report. The due-diligence statement itself is filed by the EU operator.
Do you assemble knock-down furniture during the inspection?
Yes. Assembly trials on a sample of flat-pack units check hardware counts, fit, instructions and stability once assembled.
