What is made in Udaipur
Udaipur has two kinds of supplier that importers visit: stone processors, who saw and polish local marble and granite, and craft workshops that make inlay furniture and décor. The Indian Bureau of Mines lists Udaipur, Rajsamand and Nathdwara among Rajasthan's important marble processing centres, and the national One District One Product list names granite and marble for Udaipur district.
| Product | What to know | Key inspection points |
|---|---|---|
| Green marble | From the Rikhabdeo–Kesariaji area; shades of green with a white and black network (IBM) | Shade range, resin fills, mesh backing, cracks along the network |
| Pink marble (Indian Pink) | From Babarmal; fine-grained, with black and white bands (IBM) | Band direction, shade sorting, polish |
| Granite and other stone | Slabs, tiles, cut-to-size | Thickness, flatness, edges, finish |
| Bone inlay furniture and décor | Bone pieces set in resin filler on a wood carcass | Lifting pieces, filler cracks, colour, carcass and drawers |
A February 2025 report in The Federal describes the bone inlay process in Udaipur workshops: bone is dried and treated, cut and shaped, then set in a filler of resin with mineral powder and pigment, with several days of drying before sanding. The same report quotes a maker who uses buffalo bone, not camel; ask your supplier to state the species in writing.

Common defects in Udaipur production
| Defect | Typical class | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Chest or tall unit that tips forward with drawers open, or no anti-tip kit | Critical | Tip-over can kill a child |
| Crack through a marble slab or stone top | Critical | The piece can break in handling or under load |
| Loose or lifting bone pieces, or cracks in the filler | Major | Pieces fall out after the furniture dries in a heated home |
| Mould or high moisture in the wooden carcass | Major | Mould grows in the container; joints open later |
| Marble shade outside the agreed range, or mixed blocks in one set | Major | Pieces will not match when laid or used together |
| Uneven inlay pattern or filler colour between pieces in a set | Minor | Visible when pieces stand side by side |
| Dull or swirled polish on stone | Minor | Appearance |
Timing and logistics
Udaipur is outside our inspector base cities. An inspector travels from Jodhpur, about 250 km away by road, and travel is charged at actual cost. Give us up to 5 working days' notice. A stone unit and an inlay workshop can sometimes be covered on one trip over two days.
- Inlay drying: bone inlay needs time for the filler to cure. A during-production inspection after inlay and before final polish shows filler cracks and lifting pieces while they can still be fixed.
- Monsoon: from about July to September, humidity slows filler curing and raises moisture in wood. We take moisture readings and check storage on the day.
- Heavy loads: stone and stone-top furniture are crated. Container loading supervision checks the crate count, lashing and weight distribution.
