How bedside tables are made and sold
Bedside tables are usually one piece of a bedroom range, made on the same line as the bed, chest and wardrobe. Buyers order them in pairs and sell them next to a bed of a stated height, so two things matter more than on other small furniture: the two units of a pair must look alike, and the top must sit at the height the listing promises.
Construction is simple, with one or two drawers, an open shelf or a door, but the drawer is opened every day, often in the dark. Wooden runners, small hand-cut stops and thin drawer bottoms are where the faults start. Newer designs add a USB charging point or lamp, which turns a piece of furniture into an electrical product.
Is your bedside table in tip-over scope?
This is the first question on any US order. The STURDY Act rule applies to free-standing clothing storage units that meet all three thresholds: at least 27 in (68.6 cm) tall, at least 30 lb (13.6 kg), and at least 3.2 cu ft of enclosed storage. Smaller nightstands that miss any one threshold are out of scope.
Weight alone rarely decides it. A woven-panel bedside table in our Sample 01 report weighed 16.85 kg, over 30 lb, but at 55 cm tall it was well under 27 in. Height kept it out. A tall three-drawer bedside chest in solid wood can meet all three, and then it needs a stability test, a warning label and a tip restraint like any dresser.
Measure the actual unit, not the catalogue drawing. Hand-made pieces vary, and a design drawn at 68 cm can arrive at 69.
Australia uses its own line. Its Toppling Furniture Information Standard 2024 puts clothes storage units with drawers or doors 686 mm or taller in Category 1, with a permanent warning label. Check the definitions for your design.
What we check on bedside tables
| Check | How it is checked | What fails |
|---|---|---|
| Height, weight, volume | Measure height and internal drawer sizes; weigh the unit | Unit crosses a tip-over threshold the order did not plan for |
| Drawer stops | Pull each drawer firmly to its stop | Drawer comes out and drops |
| Drawer running | Open and close each drawer; check gaps and tilt | Sticks, rubs, droops at full travel |
| Pair matching | Stand two units side by side in daylight; compare colour, grain, handles and height | Pair visibly mismatched; left and right handed versions mixed up |
| Top and edges | Check the top for flatness, ring-mark resistance if specified, and sharp corners | Bowed top, sharp edge at bed height |
| Built-in electrics | Check USB or charging modules, cable, plug and marks against the PO | Missing marks, loose module, damaged cable |
| Stability | Open the drawer and press on the front edge with the load the buyer sets | Rear lifts or unit tips |
Common bedside table defects
| Defect | Typical class | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| In-scope unit with no warning label or tip restraint (US) | Critical | A legal gap under 16 CFR 1261 |
| Charging module with exposed live parts or damaged cable | Critical | Shock and fire risk beside a bed |
| Drawer with no stop | Major | Falls out when pulled in the dark |
| Pair mismatched in colour or height | Major | Pairs are sold and placed together |
| Drawer jams or droops | Major | Main function fails |
| Nails visible, glue marks, small finish faults | Minor | Cosmetic |
Bedside units in our real reports came through cleanly: the woven-panel tables in Sample 01 and a wooden bedside cabinet in Sample 04 had no findings, though drawer function was not in the scope of the Sample 01 visit. Put drawer checks in your plan by name.
Other market rules
- Electrics. A bedside table with a USB charger, lamp or wireless pad is also an electrical product. For the US, retailers usually expect UL or ETL listing; for the EU, mains parts fall under the LVD and EMC Directive and RoHS and WEEE.
- EU storage. EN 14749:2016+A1:2022 for domestic storage furniture is the usual buyer specification under the GPSR.
- Wood and panels. TSCA Title VI for MDF and plywood drawer bottoms and backs; Lacey Act and EUDR for wood.
Packing and your PO
Bedside tables are often packed two to a carton or shipped as pairs in separate cartons. We check that pairs are packed and labelled as pairs, that the drawer is fixed shut with protection under the tape, and that legs on raised designs are blocked so they cannot snap at the joint in a drop.
- Height with a tolerance, and a statement of whether the unit is meant to stay under 27 in.
- Drawer stop type and drawer extension.
- Pair-matching rule for colour and grain, with reference photos.
- Electrical parts: make, rating and the marks required per market.
