How coverage and travel work in West Bengal

Kolkata is one of our six inspector bases. Inspections in Kolkata are Band B: US$249 per man-day plus a fixed travel charge of US$99 per man-day, usually with same-day to 3 working days' notice. Factories elsewhere in the state are Band C: an inspector travels from Kolkata and the actual travel cost is quoted before you book, with up to 5 working days' notice. Use the coverage lookup to check your factory's town.

  • Jute and leather in one trip. Mills and leather units around Kolkata can often be visited on consecutive days by the same inspector.
  • Monsoon. From about June to September, humidity raises the risk of mould on jute and leather in cartons. We check moisture, storage and packing on the day.
  • Festivals. Many units close for several days around Durga Puja, in September or October.
  • Loading. Container loading supervision at the factory checks count, cartons and the container before sealing.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have inspectors in Kolkata?

Yes. Kolkata is one of our six inspector bases. Inspections there cost US$249 per man-day plus a fixed travel charge of US$99 per man-day.

Do you inspect at jute mills outside Kolkata city?

Yes. An inspector travels from Kolkata. Outside the city the actual travel cost is quoted before you book, and you can check your town in the coverage lookup.

What goes wrong most often with jute bags?

Weak handle stitching, size out of tolerance, print that rubs off, a strong batching-oil smell and damp cartons. We check each of these on random samples and weigh cartons at packing.

Can you inspect Bankura terracotta for breakage risk?

Yes. We check cracks, firing faults and finish on sampled pieces, then open cartons to check padding and run a carton drop test if your specification asks for one.

Do you test leather for chromium VI?

Chromium VI is a lab test. We pull and seal samples at the inspection and send them to an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited lab you choose or we suggest.
