Key takeaways
- Home textiles are as big as either branch of apparel in India's exports to Canada: US$115 million in 2025, mostly bed linen and furnishing articles (UN Comtrade).
- Bilingual labels are a factory job. Fibre content must be in English and French, and Quebec wants French at least as prominent as any other language.
- Towels, blankets, cotton sheets, kitchenware and ceramics need a Made in India mark; furniture and lamps do not.
- In Ontario's Blue Box program the Canadian brand holder, not the Indian factory, usually carries the packaging obligation, so packaging data has to come from the supplier.
What Canada buys from India
India reported exports to Canada of about US$587 million across the product groups we inspect in 2025, 2% less than in 2024 (UN Comtrade). What sets Canada apart is the mix: home goods made up US$273 million of that, close to half, a higher share than for the UK or most of Europe.
| Category (HS) | India's exports to Canada, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Knitted apparel (61) | US$125m |
| Home textiles (6301–6304) | US$115m, of which bed, table and kitchen linen (6302) US$57m and furnishing articles (6304) US$53m |
| Woven apparel (62) | US$114m |
| Furniture and lighting (9401, 9403–9405) | US$54m, of which furniture (9403) US$28m |
| Rugs and carpets (57) | US$39m |
| Worked stone (68) | US$38m |
Canada also took US$76.6 million of Indian handicrafts in FY 2024-25, 2.0% of the total and up 5.9% on the previous year (EPCH Annual Report 2024-25). Rustic Furniture Outlet is among the importers in Canada we work with.
Where Canadian orders are made
Bed linen and furnishing articles come mostly from two towns. Panipat in Haryana is a Town of Export Excellence for bed linen and makes quilts, throws and cushions; Karur in Tamil Nadu, a Town of Export Excellence for handlooms, makes bed sheets, table linen and kitchen linen. Rugs come from Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Panipat.
For furniture, Jodhpur, where we are based, supplies the reclaimed wood, mango wood and sheesham pieces, and Moradabad much of the metal décor and lighting. See home textiles inspection in India and furniture inspection in India.
Bilingual and Quebec labels: what we check
Relabelling in a Canadian warehouse is slow and costly, so these checks are worth doing on the factory floor, on sampled units and on cartons:
| Check | What we look for | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Fibre content | Percentages in English and French on towels, bedding, curtains, throws and other covered textiles; dealer name and address or CA number | Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations |
| Product packaging | Product identity and net quantity in both official languages on prepackaged goods | Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act |
| Quebec | French on the product, its packaging and any instructions or warranty; no other language more prominent | Charter of the French Language |
| Origin mark | “Made in India”, legible and permanent, on listed goods such as towels, blankets, cotton sheets, kitchenware and ceramics | CBSA Memorandum D11-3-1 |
| Wood packaging | ISPM 15 mark on solid wood pallets and crates | CFIA directive D-98-08 |
The Quebec rules tightened when the Bill 96 changes on product inscriptions came fully into force on 1 June 2025, including a narrower exception for trademarks in another language. If you sell in Quebec, send us the approved French artwork and we compare it word for word with what is printed.
Packaging producer rules and other rules that apply
Packaging producer responsibility in Canada is provincial. In Ontario's Blue Box program (O. Reg. 391/21) the producer is the brand holder if it is resident in Canada; if there is none, the importer if it is resident in Ontario; and otherwise the retailer that sold to the consumer. An Indian factory is never the obligated party, so the packaging data has to come from it through you. Ask for materials and weights per SKU, and we check packed cartons against that specification. Other provinces run their own programs.
The full customs and safety checklist (business number, CARM, CCPSA, surface coatings, labels and documents) is on importing from India to Canada, and the label rules are explained in Canada CCPSA and textile labelling. For pallets, see ISPM 15 wood packaging.
Trade agreement. No India–Canada trade agreement is in force. The two governments signed terms of reference relaunching negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement on 2 March 2026. Check current duty under the Customs Tariff with your broker.
Time zones and when reports arrive
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 with no daylight saving. India is 10:30 hours ahead of Toronto and Montreal in winter and 9:30 in summer, and 13:30 or 12:30 ahead of Vancouver. Our office hours, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm IST from Monday to Saturday, therefore run overnight in Canada: from 11:00 pm to 8:00 am in Toronto in winter, and from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am in Vancouver.
That suits a report-in-the-morning routine. The inspection runs while you sleep, the report follows within 24 hours after supervisor review, and the verdict, Cleared to load, Hold or Not cleared, is usually in your inbox by the start of your day. Buyers in British Columbia can still reach us live on WhatsApp in their evening.
Booking and price
A man-day costs US$249: one inspector, one factory, eight hours, report included. Travel is free in Jodhpur, US$99 per man-day in Jaipur, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Delhi NCR and Kolkata, and at actual cost elsewhere, quoted before you book; Panipat and Karur are in that band. The fee is the same whether the goods pass or fail. See pricing, or book an inspection and attach your bilingual label artwork.
