What is made in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad's export work splits into two groups: textile mills, process houses and garment units on one side, and engineering clusters that make pumps, castings and machinery on the other. The checks for the two have little in common, so tell us which you are buying.

TradeOfficial or published record
TextilesTown of Export Excellence for textiles (DGFT, Foreign Trade Policy Appendix 1B). The Gujarat Industries Commissionerate also lists textiles, ginning, powerloom and readymade garment clusters (list last updated July 2019)
DenimMany of India's large denim mills are in Ahmedabad (Apparel Resources, 5 September 2024)
FoundryFoundry Industry Cluster, Ahmedabad (DC-MSME list of completed common facility centres, updated 20 March 2024)
PumpsPower-driven pumps; submersible pump industry in Ahmedabad and Mehsana (Gujarat Industries Commissionerate)
Dyes and pharmaceuticalsDyes and dye intermediates at Naroda; pharmaceuticals (Gujarat Industries Commissionerate)

For dyes and other chemicals we only check packing, quantity, labels and loading, and draw samples for accredited labs; see our Ankleshwar–Vapi page for how that works.

What we check on Ahmedabad products

ProductMain checks
Denim fabricShade grouping of rolls, weight in oz/yd², width and skew, 4-point fault grading, sealed samples for shrinkage and crocking
Denim jeansWash shade across lots, measurements, leg twist, rivet and button pull, zips, labels
Finished and printed fabricSide-centre-side shade, bow and skew, print registration, roll length
Greige fabricConstruction (ends and picks), width, weaving faults, roll marking
Cotton yarnLimited: cone and bag weights, packing, marking and samples for lab count and strength
PumpsWitnessed performance, hydrostatic, insulation and HV tests; nameplates and packing
Iron castingsDimensions, casting defects on machined faces, witnessed hardness, heat traceability

Denim shade groups. Indigo dyeing drifts from batch to batch, so mills sort rolls into shade groups and the jeans maker cuts each lot from one group. Agree the shade standard and how many groups you will accept per order before the visit. The inspector checks a cutting from each sampled roll against it and records which group every roll belongs to.

The yarn and fabric and apparel pages explain how sampling differs between rolls and finished garments.

Timing and logistics

  • Check fabric before cutting: a fault found on the roll costs far less than one found in finished jeans. A during-production inspection at the mill or the cutting room is often the most useful visit.
  • Fabric man-days: one inspector can grade only a limited length of fabric in a day, so the share of rolls you want opened decides the man-days.
  • Engineering tests: witnessed pump tests follow the factory's test-bed schedule; send the procedure and date early.
  • Festivals: many units slow down around Navratri (September or October) and Diwali (October or November).
  • Loading: container loading supervision checks roll and carton counts, crating and seals.

How to book an inspection in Ahmedabad

Send the product, the address of the mill or factory and the ready date through the booking form for Ahmedabad. For fabric, include the shade standard, construction sheet and fault limit; for garments, the size chart and approved sample; for pumps and castings, the drawing, datasheet and test procedure.

An inspection costs US$249 per man-day. Ahmedabad is outside our inspector base cities, so travel is charged at actual cost, quoted before you book; see pricing. The report arrives within 24 hours of the inspection, with a verdict of Cleared to load, Hold or Not cleared.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ahmedabad's Town of Export Excellence listing for?

Textiles. DGFT's Appendix 1B lists Ahmedabad for textiles. It does not name a particular product such as denim or yarn.

Can you inspect denim at the mill and the jeans at the garment factory?

Yes. They are separate inspections: fabric at the mill or before cutting, jeans after washing and packing. Each has its own checklist and sample.

How many fabric rolls do you open?

As many as you specify. Many buyers ask for 10% of the rolls in each lot, spread across shades and dye batches. The share opened decides the man-days.

Do you test yarn count and strength on site?

No. Count, strength and evenness are lab tests. On site we check weights, packing and marking, and draw and seal samples for an accredited lab.

Can you witness submersible pump tests in Ahmedabad?

Yes. We witness the factory's performance test on units we choose, and the motor insulation and high-voltage tests, and record the readings.
