What is made in Jalandhar
The Jalandhar district portal traces the city's sports goods industry to craftsmen who moved from Sialkot at Partition in 1947, and says the industry is mainly concentrated in Jalandhar and Meerut. It names Basti Danishmanda, Basti Guzan and Basti Nau as the main centres, and describes three kinds of producer: large export units, smaller units for the home market, and unregistered home-based units that take overflow work from exporters.
| Product | Source | What usually goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Footballs, volleyballs and other inflatable balls | District portal: about 60% of sports goods made in Jalandhar | Size and weight out of range, air loss, weak stitching or panel bonding |
| Cricket bats and balls | District portal | Bat dimensions and pickup weight, ball weight and seam, lacquer |
| Gloves and protective equipment | District portal | Padding, strap fixing, sizing and left/right pairing |
| Spanners, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers | PIB factsheet on the NITI Aayog tools report, 22 April 2025 | Hardness, jaw size, plating and marking |
The Council for Leather Exports also lists Jalandhar among India's major production centres for footwear, leather and leather products (2026 overview).
What we check for Jalandhar products
Each product type has its own page with the full checklist. These are the ones most often made in Jalandhar:
| Product | Key checks at the factory |
|---|---|
| Footballs and inflatable balls | Circumference and weight per size, roundness, pressure loss over a set time, valve and bladder, stitch or bond quality, print |
| Cricket bats | Length, blade width, depth and edge against the MCC limits, willow grade, handle splice, pickup weight |
| Cricket balls | Weight and circumference, seam rows and height, shape, colour and lacquer |
| Cricket pads, gloves and helmets | Helmet certificate and model match, grille fit, padding, straps and buckles, pairing |
| Fitness equipment | Weight tolerance, welds, grips, assembly and function |
| Hand tools | Hardness on jaws and striking faces, jaw opening and socket size by gauge, plating, forging marks and origin marking |
For the wider picture, see sporting goods inspection and hand tools and hardware inspection. Helmet impact tests, rebound and water uptake on match balls, and tool hardness certificates are lab work; we can pull and seal samples through lab testing coordination.
Common defects in Jalandhar production
| Defect | Typical class | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Helmet with a missing or wrong certification mark, or a grille that can be pushed onto the face | Critical | Head and face injury; the product cannot be sold as protective |
| Hand tool that cracks or deforms under load, or a sharp burr on a handle | Critical | User injury |
| Ball losing pressure, or outside the size and weight range for its size number | Major | Fails the buyer's spec and any match-ball claim |
| Open stitches, lifting panels or a split seam on a ball | Major | The ball fails quickly in use |
| Bat with a cracked handle splice or dimensions over the limit | Major | Not legal for play or breaks early |
| Left and right gloves or pads mismatched in a pack | Major | Unsellable set |
| Plating patches, rust spots or poor print on tools | Minor | Appearance; rust can spread in transit |
| Logo print off-centre or smudged on balls and bats | Minor | Brand appearance |
Timing and logistics
Jalandhar is outside our inspector base cities, so an inspector travels from Delhi NCR and travel is charged at actual cost. Give us up to 5 working days' notice. If you also buy in Ludhiana, the two cities can often be combined on one trip; we confirm man-days when you book.
- Home-based work: the district portal says exporters pass part of large orders to small home-based units. A during-production inspection catches stitching and finishing problems before the full lot comes back to the main factory.
- Monsoon: from about July to September, humid storage can cause rust on tools and mould on leather balls and gloves. We check storage, rust protection and carton dryness on the day.
- Loading: if goods from several units are packed together, container loading supervision checks the carton count and condition as they go in.
