What a bathroom adds to a mirror
Glass thickness, distortion, backing film, frame corners and hanging hardware are the same for any wall mirror and are covered on mirrors and mirror frames. A bathroom adds daily steam, splashes and cleaning sprays. That changes three things: the silver layer must resist moisture at its edges, the frame must not swell, rust or lose its finish, and any electrics must be safe near water.
Framed mirrors from India come mainly from the same exporters that make furniture and handicrafts. Jodhpur, Jaipur and Saharanpur are Towns of Export Excellence for handicrafts, but no official source names any town for bathroom mirrors. TradeStat shows HS 7009 92 00 (other glass mirrors, framed) at US$56.52 million in FY2024-25 and US$54.16 million in FY2025-26 (provisional). That covers all framed mirrors, not only bathroom ones.
What we check on bathroom mirrors
| Check | How it is checked | What fails |
|---|---|---|
| Edge sealing | Look at every cut edge and the back paint near it; check edge sealant where ordered | Raw or chipped edges, back paint scratched or missing near the edge, early dark spots |
| Frame in humidity | Wood: moisture meter and sealed back faces. Metal: welds, corners and the back checked for rust and bare spots | Unsealed wood on the back or in the rebate; rust or thin coating on the hidden side |
| Cabinet doors and hinges | Open and close each door several times; check gaps, soft-close action and level | Doors that drop, rub or do not close evenly; hinge screws in particle board edges |
| Cabinet body | Material checked against the spec; edges of MDF or particle board checked for sealing | Exposed board edges inside the cabinet that will swell |
| LED: earth and hi-pot | Earth continuity on Class I mirrors; dielectric strength (hi-pot) test with a calibrated tester | No or high-resistance earth path; breakdown during the hi-pot test |
| LED: function | Switch or touch sensor, dimming, colour temperature, demister pad warming; run for the time in the plan | Dead sections of LED, flicker, sensor not responding, demister not heating |
| LED: marking and wiring | Rating plate, IP marking, CE or UKCA mark, cable entry and strain relief; driver mounting | IP marking missing or lower than ordered; loose driver; cable that can pull out |
Common defects and their classes
| Defect | Typical class |
|---|---|
| LED mirror fails earth continuity or hi-pot | Critical |
| Cracked glass or sharp exposed edge on a frameless mirror | Critical |
| IP or safety marking missing | Major |
| Black edge or silver spots in the viewing area | Major |
| Cabinet door misaligned or hinge not holding | Major |
| Rust on a metal frame | Major |
| Dead LED section or demister not working | Major |
| Small scratch on the frame back | Minor |
We have inspected wall mirrors as part of furniture orders, for example in Sample 02 in Jaipur. Those were decorative wall mirrors, not bathroom or LED mirrors.
Mirror quality and LED mirror rules
- EN 1036-1. Sets minimum quality limits for optical, visual and edge faults, and durability tests, for mirrors from silver-coated float glass 2 to 10 mm thick for internal use in buildings. It does not apply to mirrors used in aggressive or constantly high-humidity places such as swimming pools, saunas and medical baths. Mirror makers' test reports to EN 1036-1 list a copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) test to ISO 9227 and a condensation-water test. These are lab tests; on site we check edges and back paint.
- LED mirrors in the EU and UK. A mains-powered LED mirror is electrical equipment: LVD and EMC, RoHS and WEEE, and CE or UKCA marking.
- Bathroom zones. Wiring rules such as IEC 60364-7-701 and its national versions divide a bathroom into zones around the bath and shower, and the IP rating needed depends on where the mirror is fitted. Tell us the IP rating you ordered; we check the marking, not the installation.
- US. Retailers usually ask for UL or ETL listing of LED mirrors. Mirror cabinets with MDF or particle board fall under TSCA Title VI.
Packing and purchase-order points
LED mirrors add a driver, a sensor and cables to a fragile sheet of glass. We check that the driver is fixed so it cannot swing into the glass back, that cables are tied, and that the carton passes a drop test followed by a power-on test. In the PO, state:
- Edge finish and edge sealing, and the EN 1036-1 durability report you expect from the glass supplier.
- Frame material and how the back and rebate are sealed or coated.
- For cabinets: hinge type, carcass material and edge sealing.
- For LED mirrors: voltage, plug or hard-wired, IP rating, certification marks, and the electrical tests to run on site.
Inlaid frames for bathrooms are covered on bone inlay mirrors.
