What counts as a bathroom accessory
Indian exporters sell bathroom accessories as part of their home décor ranges, not as plumbing. The IHGF Delhi Fair, run by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, lists bathroom accessories as its own category, with terms such as soap dispensers and sets, bathroom mirrors, bathroom fittings and laundry baskets. Taps, basins and WCs are sanitaryware and sit outside this family.
Most orders mix three kinds of goods from one supplier:
- Countertop pieces: soap dispensers, soap dishes, tumblers, toothbrush holders and vanity trays, usually sold as a matched set.
- Wall-fixed pieces: towel rails and rings, robe hooks, toilet-roll holders, shelves and shower caddies, sold with a fixing kit.
- Larger items: bathroom mirrors, mirror cabinets, laundry baskets and hampers.
A single range can combine brass collars on a ceramic dispenser, a marble tray and a matching brass towel ring. That is why the inspection plan is built around the set, with material checks added for each part.
How the checks change by material and product
| Page | What drives the inspection |
|---|---|
| Bathroom accessory sets | Pump output and leaks, soap-dish drainage, matching every piece to the master set, gift-box fit |
| Ceramic bathroom accessories | Crazing, hairline cracks, glaze shade across a reactive-glaze set, unglazed foot, US decorative ceramicware marking |
| Marble and stone bathroom accessories | Natural fissures versus cracks, resin filling, sealing and stain resistance, vein match, weight in transit |
| Metal bathroom accessories | Base metal and stainless grade, plating and PVD finish, salt-spray results, rust at welds and inside tubes |
| Wall-mounted bathroom accessories | Static load, fixing kit and template, hole centres, warnings that a rail is not a grab bar |
| Bathroom mirrors | Silver-edge corrosion, frames in humidity, cabinet doors, electrical checks on LED mirrors |
| Laundry baskets and hampers | Moisture and mould in natural fibre, insect damage, handle and lid strength, liners |
What every bathroom inspection adds to a décor inspection
A decorative brass bowl only has to look right on a shelf. A brass soap dish sits in standing water, gets cleaned with bathroom sprays and is touched every day. So on top of the usual décor checks we add:
- Humidity and water resistance. Lacquer cover on brass, plating on steel, sealing on stone and glaze on ceramic are looked at closely, because these fail in a bathroom months after delivery.
- Set matching across materials and batches. All pieces of a range are laid out together under the same light against the master set. A matte black towel ring that is a shade warmer than the dispenser is a complaint.
- Function. Pumps are primed and counted, dispensers are filled and turned upside down, rails and hooks are loaded.
- Fixings and instructions. Wall plugs, screws, set screws and templates are counted against the pack list for each SKU.
- Labels. Care instructions, origin marking, warnings and barcodes on the retail pack.
Sampling and defect classes follow our usual approach; see AQL sampling explained.
Where bathroom accessories are made in India
No official source names a bathroom-accessory cluster. The towns below are recognised for the general craft that bathroom pieces are made from, and that is all we claim for them:
- Moradabad: "Metal Craft" in the national One District One Product (ODOP) list; added as a Town of Export Excellence for handicrafts under the Foreign Trade Policy 2023.
- Aligarh: ODOP "Lock & Hardware" and "Metal Handicraft".
- Bulandshahr district (Khurja): ODOP "Ceramic Product".
- Agra: ODOP "Handicrafts - Stone & Marble"; Sirohi: ODOP "Marble Articles".
- Saharanpur: Town of Export Excellence for handicrafts; ODOP "Wood Crafting".
For scale, EPCH reports handicraft exports in its Artmetalwares group at ₹4,349.83 crore in FY2025-26, and Articles of Stone & Pottery at ₹1,438.92 crore. These groups cover all handicrafts in those materials, not only bathroom goods.
We have inspectors in Moradabad and Saharanpur; see quality inspection in Moradabad.
Rules that apply to bathroom accessories
- EU. Non-electrical bathroom accessories have no product-specific EU directive. They fall under the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988, and coatings and metals under REACH.
- UK. General product safety law applies in the same way. See UK import compliance.
- US. Prop 65 warnings matter for brass (lead), glazes and some coatings. Ceramic tumblers can trigger FDA marking rules; see the ceramic page.
- Electrical items. LED and demister mirrors need electrical conformity, such as CE under LVD and EMC.
- Packing. Wooden crates for stone and heavy sets must meet ISPM 15.
Packing and purchase-order points for the whole range
Bathroom ranges ship as a mix of heavy, fragile and finished-metal goods in one container. Stone trays and ceramic dispensers need cell dividers or moulded pulp; plated metal needs its own polybag so pieces do not rub; fibre baskets need dry storage before stuffing. In the purchase order, list every SKU of the range with its master sample reference, the finish name and code, the pump or fixing kit supplier, the retail pack and the drop test you expect. A range bought from two factories, for example ceramic from one and metal from another, needs one master set agreed by both. Booking a pre-shipment inspection at each factory lets the inspector compare against the same reference.
