What is a shade band?

A shade band is a set of swatches cut from each dye lot, or each wash, of a production run and mounted side by side for the buyer's approval. It records the accepted colour range, usually a standard plus light and dark limits, so lots can be grouped and every piece judged against an agreed reference.

What a shade band contains, and what it is not

Dyeing never gives exactly the same colour twice. A shade band turns that natural variation into a written limit. A typical band carries the approved standard, one swatch per dye lot or roll group labelled with its lot number, and the buyer's marks for the lightest and darkest acceptable shade. In denim the same word is used for a wash shade band: garments or panels showing the accepted range from the lightest to the darkest wash.

Worked example: linen curtains in three dye lots

A factory makes 600 pairs of olive linen curtains from fabric dyed in three lots, A, B and C. The buyer approved a shade band with a light and a dark limit. At inspection the inspector lays a panel from each lot next to the band under the same light. Lots A and B sit inside the limits. Lot C is darker than the dark limit.

The result is not a workmanship defect but a colour difference from the approved reference, so the report goes to Hold for the buyer to decide: accept lot C as a separate shade, or have it replaced. Either way, panels from different lots must not be paired in one set, because two curtains side by side on one window show even a small shade gap.

Where it matters

Shade bands matter wherever pieces are seen together: curtains, bed sets, piece-dyed fabric and denim. In hand-knotted rugs, colour bands within one rug are a different issue: see abrash.

How Clear To Load uses it

We do not make shade bands; the buyer approves them. Send yours, or approve one held at the factory, and the inspector checks sampled pieces from each lot against it, records lot numbers by carton and photographs each comparison under the same light. Instrument colour measurement is a lab or mill task. A colour difference from the approved reference leads to Hold, not an automatic fail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a shade band and a lab dip?

A lab dip is the small trial dyeing approved before bulk production to set the target colour. A shade band is made from bulk lots and shows the range of colour the buyer accepts in production.

Can photos replace a physical shade band?

No. Screens and cameras change colour. Photos record what the inspector saw, but the judgement has to be made against a physical reference under controlled light.
