What is made in Varanasi
Varanasi's export trade rests on small units: weavers, zari and finishing workers, bead makers and lathe-turners. The exporter usually collects, finishes, labels and packs. The Uttar Pradesh One District One Product scheme lists three products for the district: silk products, wooden toys and Gulabi Meenakari enamel work. IBEF names Varanasi among India's silk centres, and the Carpet Export Promotion Council lists it as a carpet producing centre.

Silk, zari and origin claims
The costliest disputes on Varanasi textiles are about what the product is, not how it looks.
- Silk or not: polyester and viscose can look like silk. The inspector compares hand and lustre with the approved sample, and a burn test on a loose yarn gives an indication; a fibre test at a lab confirms it before a "100% silk" label ships.
- Zari: real, tested and imitation zari differ in metal and price. We record what the supplier declares and pull samples if you want the metal tested.
- Handloom and GI claims: a Banaras GI claim depends on the producer being an authorised user of the GI. We record the looms and the unit we visit, but we do not certify a GI or Silk Mark claim.
Common defects in Varanasi production
| Defect | Products | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Small part or sharp point on a toy for young children | Wooden toys | Critical |
| Fibre content different from the label | Sarees, fabrics, stoles | Major |
| Broken or long floats, missed motifs in the brocade | Sarees, brocades | Major |
| Shade difference between pieces or against the sample | Silk fabrics, sarees | Major |
| Short length or missing blouse piece | Sarees | Major |
| Rough bead holes that cut the thread | Beads | Major |
| Chipped lac, uneven colour bands | Wooden toys | Minor |
| Oil spots, loose threads, creased packing | Textiles | Minor |
Timing and logistics
- Many small units: one order may be woven in several units and finished elsewhere. A during-production inspection on the first finished pieces catches fibre, shade and length problems before the whole lot is woven.
- Neighbouring clusters: Varanasi borders the Bhadohi carpet district, so rug and textile visits can sometimes share one trip; see inspection in Bhadohi–Mirzapur.
- Monsoon: from about July to September, humidity can mark silk and swell wooden toys. We check storage and packing on the day.
- Festivals: many units slow down around Diwali, in October or November.
