What is made in Sivakasi
The Virudhunagar District Export Action Plan (Government of Tamil Nadu) describes how Sivakasi's printing trade began with labels for the town's fireworks and match industries and grew, with modern machinery, into a printing hub. It counts 380 printing presses and 82 offset presses in and around the town, and says the paper is bought in from other states. Diaries are the product the plan singles out; the table lists the print products this page covers.
| Product | Typical construction | Key inspection points |
|---|---|---|
| Diaries and planners | Printed text block, sewn or glued; case-bound or soft cover; ribbon, elastic | Date pages in order, year and calendar text, binding, cover finish |
| Notebooks | Ruled or plain paper, spiral, sewn or glued binding | Sheet count, ruling, ink bleed, spiral pitch, cover lamination |
| Printed books | Sheet-fed offset; perfect bound, sewn, case bound or saddle stitched | Collation, page pull, colour against proof, trim, ISBN |
| Printed cartons and labels | Offset-printed board, die-cut and glued | Artwork version, colour, barcodes, die-cut and glue lines |
Sivakasi is also known for fireworks and safety matches. Clear To Load does not inspect fireworks, matches or other explosive goods.

The paper, printing and packaging page explains what every print inspection covers. For children's books sold in the US, see CPSIA for children's products: ordinary paper books have a lead-testing exemption that book-and-toy sets and books for children 3 and under do not. For books sold in the EU, see GPSR. An FSC logo on the cover needs a valid chain-of-custody certificate for the printer; see FSC in India.
Common defects in printed books and diaries
| Defect | Typical cause | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Small detachable part on a book for under-3s | Novelty item not fixed to the book | Critical |
| Missing, doubled or upside-down section | Gathering error | Major |
| Wrong year, dates or weekday on diary pages | Old plates or files reused | Major |
| Pages coming loose | EVA glue on coated paper, shallow spine milling | Major |
| Colour clearly off the proof | Ink density drift across the run | Major |
| Wavy pages, cover warping | Paper grain across the spine, damp stock | Major or minor, by severity |
| Set-off, hickeys, scuffed corners | Stacking wet sheets, dust, loose packing | Minor |
Diaries carry a risk other books do not: a single wrong date page or a holiday list for the wrong country runs through every copy. We check calendar pages against your approved file, not only against the printer's proof.
Timing and logistics
- Dated products: diaries and calendars have a fixed selling season, and a late or faulty run cannot be sold the next year. Book early, and ask for a during-production inspection on the first bound copies so a binding or date fault is caught before the run is finished.
- Destructive tests: agree how many copies may be pulled or cut open for binding checks. They come out of the sample and are not shipped.
- Humidity: paper takes up moisture, which causes curl, cockling and weak cartons. We record moisture on stock and finished goods on the day.
- Loading: books are heavy for their volume. Container loading supervision checks the count, carton strength, pallet build and a dry container.
- Other printers in Tamil Nadu: the same DC-MSME list includes printing clusters in Krishnagiri district, at Krishnagiri and Hosur, so an order split across towns can be planned as one trip.
