What is made in Erode
The district administration lists handloom products, dairy products, raw cotton and rice as Erode's major exports. It says handloom weaving continues in Erode and Chennimalai, that there are important dyeing works in Erode, Chennimalai and Bhavani, that several factories in Erode print cotton fabric, and that Erode, Chennimalai and Gobichettipalayam are centres of cotton ginning.
Erode is not one of the DGFT Towns of Export Excellence; neighbouring Karur is the one listed for handlooms. Erode also works leather: the administration notes several tanneries that process leather brought in from elsewhere and send it abroad, and the Council for Leather Exports' 2026 overview lists Erode among the major production centres for footwear, leather and leather products in Tamil Nadu.

What we check for Erode products
| Product | Checks on the day |
|---|---|
| Bedspreads and quilts | Finished size and squareness, edge binding, pattern alignment across the width, shade between pieces |
| Towels | Weight per piece and GSM, loop height, pulled loops, hem and border stitching |
| Curtains and cushion covers | Panel drop and width, matched pairs, zips, print placement |
| Handloom fabrics | Width, ends and picks against the spec, slubs and density variation judged against an agreed standard |
| Cotton and handloom sarees | Length, border and pallu finish, colour bleeding on a damp white cloth |
| Leather and leather goods | Grade and defects against the agreed selection, thickness, shade, smell and moisture, packing |
Colour fastness and shrinkage are lab tests, and so is chromium VI in leather (see chromium VI in leather). We pull and seal samples through lab testing coordination.
Common defects in Erode production
| Defect | Where it shows up | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Broken needle or metal fragment | Stitched made-ups | Critical |
| Mould on leather or damp textiles in cartons | Goods packed before they were fully dry | Critical |
| Dye bleeding from a dark border into a light ground | Yarn-dyed bedspreads, towels and sarees | Major |
| Shade difference between pieces | Lots dyed in separate batches at different dye houses | Major |
| Size or weight below specification | Bedspreads and towels | Major |
| Weaving faults: broken ends, missing picks, floats | Handloom and powerloom fabric | Major or minor, by size and position |
| Crooked hems, loose threads, small stains | All textiles | Minor |
Handloom fabric has natural irregularity. Agree in writing which slubs and density changes are acceptable before the inspection, so the inspector does not class the character of the cloth as a defect.
Timing and logistics
We have no inspector based in Tamil Nadu, so an inspector travels in and the travel cost is quoted before you book. Erode sits in the same western Tamil Nadu belt as Tiruppur (under 50 km away in a straight line), Coimbatore and Karur, so visits to several suppliers can share one trip if you book them for consecutive days.
- Weaving, dyeing and stitching at different units: a during-production inspection after dyeing and before stitching catches shade and bleeding problems early.
- Containers: trade press reported in August 2025 that CONCOR's inland container depot at Irugur, Coimbatore, began sending export containers through Kochi and serves exporters in Erode. Container loading supervision records the count, carton condition and seal.
- Festivals: many units close for Pongal in mid-January and slow down around Diwali.
How to book an inspection in Erode
Send the product, the factory's address and the ready date through the booking form for Erode. Include the specification with size, weight and construction, photos of the approved sample, and your written tolerance for handloom irregularity.
