What is made in Ambur
Ambur is in northern Tamil Nadu, on the Chennai–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor. Until August 2019 it was part of Vellore district; it is now one of the four taluks of Tirupattur district, with Vaniyambadi, Natrampalli and Tirupattur. The district's export plan names leather and leather-based industry as its main activity and says most of its exports are finished goods such as leather shoes, belts and garments. It also notes that most leather units are MSMEs scattered across the district, alongside several large factories.
| Product | Typical construction | Key inspection points |
|---|---|---|
| Leather shoes and boots | Cemented, welted or direct-injected soles on cow, buffalo or goat uppers | Pair matching, lasting, sole and heel bond, nails inside, size marking |
| Shoe uppers | Cut and closed uppers shipped to shoe factories abroad | Pattern size, stitching, shade within a size run, lining, count per size |
| Belts and garments | Cut, skived, stitched and edge-finished leather | Length per size, buckle finish, panel shade, seams, lining and labels |
| Gloves | Leather palm and textile back, or full leather | Size, seam strength, thumb and fingertip stitching, pairing |
What we check for Ambur leather products
Each product type has its own checklist. These pages set out the checks, defect classes and market rules in detail:
| If you buy | Main checks | Checklist |
|---|---|---|
| Formal and casual shoes, boots | Pairing, lasting, sole bond, inside finish, zips | Leather shoe inspection |
| Sandals | Strap and toe-post pull, buckles, footbed bond, colour rub | Leather sandal inspection |
| Belts | Length to the centre hole, buckle plating, ply bond, edges | Leather belt inspection |
| Jackets and garments | Measurements per size, hide matching across panels, lining, zips | Leather garment inspection |
| Work gloves | Size, seams, palm reinforcement, pairing | Leather glove inspection |
The industry pages for footwear and leather goods cover what every inspection includes. Chromium VI in leather that touches the skin, azo dyes and sole-bond strength in newtons are laboratory results. The district export plan itself notes that there are no testing labs within Tirupattur district, so samples travel to an outside lab. We pull and seal them at the inspection and send them to an accredited lab through lab testing coordination; see the chromium VI rule.
Common defects in leather footwear and goods
| Defect | Typical cause | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Nail or tack point inside a shoe | Heel nails too long, lasting tacks left in | Critical |
| Mould on uppers, linings or gloves | Damp leather, humid storage, no desiccant | Critical or major, by extent |
| Sole lifting at the toe or heel | Poor roughing, wrong adhesive, short press time | Major |
| Shade difference within a pair or a garment | Parts cut from different hides or dye lots | Major |
| Wrong size mark or mixed sizes in a box | Boxing and labelling errors | Major |
| Grain cracks at the flex line | Dry or over-finished leather | Major |
| Adhesive stains, loose threads, uneven edge paint | Careless finishing | Minor |
Your defect list decides the final class. On shoe uppers shipped as parts, we class missing or wrong-size components in a size run as major, because the receiving factory cannot complete the pair.
Timing and logistics
Tirupattur's export plan describes the district as land-locked and dependent on road and rail links to Chennai for both seaport and airport, with heavy congestion on the highway. Where a container is stuffed at the factory, container loading supervision checks the count, carton condition and a dry container before it leaves.
- Several units, one order: cutting, closing and finishing can be split between a main factory and smaller units. A during-production inspection at the closing or lasting stage finds shade and size problems before soles go on.
- Combining factories: where your suppliers are in Ambur and Vaniyambadi, we can plan consecutive days on one trip, which keeps travel cost down.
- Monsoon: Tamil Nadu's main rains come with the north-east monsoon, from about October to December. Damp leather grows mould in closed cartons, so we check storage, moisture and desiccants on the day.
