What is made in Kolhapur
TERI's 2012 cluster profile describes a foundry industry that grew from the 1960s around oil engines and farm equipment. It estimated cluster output at about 600,000 tonnes a year, mainly for the automotive sector, with pumps, valves, sugar and textile machinery as other customers. These figures are from 2012; ask suppliers for current capacity.

Timing and logistics
We have no inspector based in Maharashtra, so an inspector travels in and the travel cost is quoted before you book. Foundries, chappal workshops and textile units sit in different parts of the district, and TERI notes foundries in Sangli district too, so tell us every address when you book.
- Castings: a first-article or during-production inspection on the first batch from a new pattern catches dimensional and porosity problems before the full run is poured and machined.
- Chappals: pairs are made by hand in small workshops and gathered by the exporter, so inspect once the whole lot is gathered and packed.
- Monsoon: from about June to September, rain and humidity bring rust on castings and mould on leather. We check storage, moisture and rust protection on the day.
- Festivals: many units close for several days around Diwali.
