What is made in Jamnagar
Jamnagar's brass trade runs from rod to finished part. Rod and hexagon bar are extruded, often from remelted scrap; turned parts come off automats, CNC lathes and sliding-head machines; fitting and valve bodies are hot-forged in closed dies; then parts are deburred, cleaned and plated. One order often moves between several workshops before the exporter packs it.
| Record | What it says |
|---|---|
| Gujarat Industries Commissionerate, cluster list (last updated July 2019) | Brass Parts cluster in Jamnagar, also taken up for cluster development; Jamnagar is also listed for castings and forgings |
| IANS, 18 February 2026 | Nearly 8,000 units making brass components, supplying sectors from Indian Railways to defence |
Jamnagar is not on DGFT's list of Towns of Export Excellence. Because scrap is a common feedstock, the alloy in a lot can drift from the grade on the invoice. That is the main reason export buyers inspect here: a free-machining leaded brass that is fine in a European connector can be illegal in an American drinking-water fitting.
What we check on Jamnagar brass parts
| Product | Main checks |
|---|---|
| Brass precision parts | Witnessed handheld XRF alloy and lead screening on parts we select, BSP, NPT or metric thread gauging, turned dimensions, burrs and swarf, plating thickness and adhesion |
| Fasteners | Thread fit, head marking, dimensions, finish, count and bagging |
| Flanges and pipe fittings | Dimensions to the standard, marking, heat traceability to the certificate |
| Valves | Forged bodies, seat and shell tests, operation, marking |
| Door and cabinet hardware | Finish, plating, function and fit of fixings |
XRF on site is a screen, not a certificate. A lead result near a legal limit, dezincification resistance or residual stress goes to an accredited lab through lab testing coordination. The rules behind the lead limits are on our RoHS and Prop 65 pages; rod and forging stock certificates are covered under EN 10204 certificates. See also the castings, forgings and fasteners hub.
Common defects in brass parts
| Defect | Why it matters | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Leaded brass in a part ordered lead-free for drinking water | Illegal for that use; recall risk | Critical |
| Porosity that leaks in a gas or water fitting | Leak in service | Critical |
| NPT thread supplied for BSP, or the reverse | Joint seems tight but leaks or strips | Major |
| Swarf or burrs inside bores and cross-holes | Blocks jets and valves; loose metal in electrical parts | Major |
| Grades mixed between lots or bags | Wrong alloy reaches the assembly line | Major |
| Thin or peeling plating | Corrosion and appearance complaints | Major |
| Tarnish or tool marks on visible faces | Appearance | Minor |
Timing and logistics
- Check the first lot: a during-production inspection on the first machined lot confirms the alloy and threads before thousands of parts are made.
- Counting small parts: lots are often counted by weight. The inspector checks bag weights against a counted sample and the packing list.
- Tarnish: brass tarnishes in humid air. Ask for sealed bags with desiccant or anti-tarnish paper, labelled by part number, alloy and lot.
- Several workshops: if turning, forging and plating are done at different units, tell us where the finished lot will be packed; that is where the final inspection happens.
- Loading: brass is dense, so cartons are heavy and pallets reach their weight limit before they are full. Container loading supervision checks pallet and carton counts, strapping and seals.
