What is made in Channapatna
Channapatna is known for wooden toys turned on a lathe and coloured with lac. A stick of coloured lac is pressed against the spinning piece, and friction melts it into a glossy coat. The same method makes stacking toys, rattles, spinning tops, pull-along animals, dolls and small household pieces.
| Record | Detail |
|---|---|
| Name | Channapatna Toys & Dolls |
| GI application | 23, class 28 (toys), area Karnataka |
| Applicant | Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd, Bengaluru |
| Certificate | 30 January 2006; renewal details filed August 2025; valid to 6 February 2035 |
The GI protects the name, not the safety of the toy. A toy can be genuine Channapatna and still fail a lead test, so export buyers need both the origin papers and a lab report for every colour used.
What we check on Channapatna toys
| Check | How it is checked on the day |
|---|---|
| Small parts | Turned beads, pegs and wheels identified; tried in a small parts cylinder on toys for under-3s |
| Joints | Wheels, pegs and stacked rings pulled and twisted by hand; drop on a hard floor where agreed, then rechecked |
| Points, edges and splinters | Every face, end grain and axle end felt with the fingertips under good light |
| Lac colours | Each colour compared with the approved sample; lac lot labels matched to the lab report |
| Cords | Cord length and end beads on pull-along toys measured against the tested sample |
| Moisture and packing | Moisture meter on sampled pieces; cartons opened and smelled for mould |
| Markings | CE or UKCA mark, age grade, warnings, batch code, US tracking label |
The full method is on the wooden toy inspection page; the toys inspection page covers other materials, and educational toys and puzzles covers wooden puzzles and learning sets. Lead, element migration and the formal torque, tension and drop tests run in a lab under ASTM F963 and EN 71; for the US, see also CPSIA for children's products. If your order is lacquered décor rather than toys, see wooden décor inspection.
Common defects in Channapatna toys
| Defect | Typical cause | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Bead, peg or wheel comes off by hand | Dry glue joint or a press fit that loosened as the wood dried | Critical |
| Lac colour not covered by the lab report | New lac stick bought to finish the order | Critical until tested |
| Detachable part fits the small parts cylinder | Under-3s toy with a removable turned piece | Critical |
| Cracked or split turned piece | Wood not dry enough before turning | Major; critical for under-3s |
| Mould spots or musty smell | Damp wood or packing in wet weather | Major |
| Pull cord longer than the tested sample | Cord cut by eye in the workshop | Major |
| Lac colour off the approved shade | Different lac batch | Minor or major, by tolerance |
| Uneven gloss, lathe marks, lac drips | Hand finishing | Minor |
Timing and logistics
We have no inspector based in Karnataka, so an inspector travels in and the travel cost is quoted before you book. Channapatna lies on the road between Bengaluru and Mysuru, so a visit can often share a trip with factories in either city.
- Inspect the gathered lot: toys are often turned in several small workshops and gathered for finishing and packing. Inspect once the full lot is packed, or book a during-production inspection on the first finished batch of a new design.
- Test before you ship: send lac colours for lead and migration tests before full production. Re-testing after a failed result can delay the shipment by weeks.
- Monsoon: from about June to September, wood takes longer to dry and toys packed damp can grow mould at sea. We take moisture readings on the day.
- Festivals: output slows around Dasara and Diwali, between September and November.
