Key takeaways

  • SGS scores 14 of 18 and TÜV SÜD 8. Most of the gap is booking and report speed: SGS links an online booking tool and states a report time; TÜV SÜD's pages state neither. SGS's Indian accreditation scope is also wider.
  • Both have large Indian companies: SGS India since 1950 (head office in Mumbai) and TÜV SÜD South Asia since 1995 (corporate office in Pune).
  • TÜV SÜD runs a NABL-accredited hardlines lab in Gurugram for wood and metal art-ware, ceramics, glassware, candles and toys, which suits home décor buyers.
  • Neither publishes an inspection price. Both hold ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation in India. SGS India's scope covers consumer goods: textiles and garments, leather goods, and furniture, gift articles and handicrafts. TÜV SÜD's covers food and industrial inspection.
  • The scores measure what each website publishes, not inspector skill. Ask both for a sample report in your product category.

Scores on the published rubric

We score every inspection company on the same six-point rubric used in our list of quality inspection companies in India. Each criterion scores 0 to 3, for a maximum of 18. Every score comes from the company's own website (TÜV SÜD from tuvsud.com only) and, for accreditation since 14 Oct 2026, India's NABCB register, all checked on 14 Oct 2026 (SGS India's NABCB scope rechecked on 15 Oct 2026).

Updated 15 Oct 2026: on re-checking SGS India's NABCB entry (IB 003), we raised SGS's accreditation score from 2 to 3 and its total from 13 to 14. Our earlier version wrongly said its Indian scope covered garments and home textiles only.

TÜV SÜD's low score reflects what its website publishes for buyers, not the quality of its inspectors. If it publishes a booking route or report time, we will re-score it. The rubric does not score inspector skill, product knowledge or report quality.

Offices and labs in India

Both groups are large in India, but their consumer goods labs sit in different places.

  • SGS lists 39 Indian locations in its contact directory. Labs include Tirupur and Chennai in Tamil Nadu, Manesar in Haryana, and Bengaluru, Kolkata, Pune, Navi Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Offices include Ludhiana, Karur, Coimbatore and Jamnagar. The directory does not say which of these handle consumer goods inspection.
  • TÜV SÜD lists offices from Agra, Ludhiana and Noida in the north to Tirupur, Coimbatore and Kochi in the south. Its Gurugram lab covers food, softlines, hardlines and electrical goods. The Ambur lab, in Tamil Nadu's leather cluster, covers softlines. The Gurugram hardlines lab lists wood and metal art-ware, ceramics and glassware, candles and toys in its scope.

Office lists show where a company has staff, not where its inspectors travel. For a factory in Moradabad, Jodhpur or Saharanpur, ask each company where the inspector comes from and whether travel is charged on top.

Which suits your product

  • Furniture. SGS publishes a furniture inspection page: raw material checks before production, inspectors specialised by product range, reports on completion, and SGS seals on containers after loading on request. TÜV SÜD's pre-shipment page does not name furniture; its product list includes "home textiles / furnishing". See furniture inspection in India.
  • Home décor, ceramics and candles. TÜV SÜD's Gurugram hardlines lab tests wood and metal art-ware, ceramics, glassware and candles, close to the NCR export clusters. See home décor and handicrafts inspection.
  • Garments and home textiles. Both name textiles. TÜV SÜD lists apparel and home textiles for pre-shipment inspection, with softlines labs in Gurugram and Ambur. SGS names textiles on its India inspection page and has labs in Tirupur and Chennai. See home textiles inspection.
  • Food. TÜV SÜD's own site states ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation, audited by NABCB, for food inspection in India.

Choose SGS if, choose TÜV SÜD if

Choose SGS if you want to book online and need a stated report time, you buy furniture and want a group with a published furniture inspection service, or your retailer's vendor manual names SGS.

Choose TÜV SÜD if you also need product testing or certification from a German group, you buy hardlines such as art-ware, ceramics, candles or toys and want testing in Gurugram, or you ship food from India and need an inspection body accredited for that work.

Ask either company:

  1. Which Indian entity will inspect, and does an ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation cover your product?
  2. How soon after the inspection will you receive the report?
  3. What is the total price for your factory's city, including travel and any reinspection?

How this comparison was made

We read SGS's and TÜV SÜD's own pages on 14 Oct 2026: company facts, India pages, location lists, inspection services, lab pages and accreditation statements. We used no third-party reviews. TÜV SÜD's country count comes from the boilerplate of its own February 2025 press release. Each fact is linked under Sources.

India's accreditation register, kept by NABCB, also lists ISO/IEC 17020 Type A accreditations for SGS India Pvt Ltd (IB 003) and TÜV SÜD South Asia Pvt Ltd (IB 011), checked 14 Oct 2026. Since that date our rubric counts the register for accreditation. SGS India's scope covers stage and final inspection of textiles and garments, leather goods, and furniture, gift articles and handicrafts, so SGS scores 3 (rechecked 15 Oct 2026). TÜV SÜD's covers food, metals and industrial sectors, a narrow scope for consumer goods, so it scores 2. Look up the certificate for your product before you book; our best list explains how.

Clear To Load, which publishes this page, is a third option for factories in India only: an inspection company based in Jodhpur, not yet accredited (ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation is in progress), without its own lab, and working in India only. It scores 10 of 18 on the same rubric. See Clear To Load vs SGS.

Frequently asked questions

Is SGS or TÜV SÜD better for inspections in India?

On our rubric SGS scores 14 of 18 and TÜV SÜD 8, mainly because SGS publishes an online booking route and a report time and TÜV SÜD does not, and SGS India's accreditation scope covers consumer goods. TÜV SÜD may still suit you if you need its testing or certification services.

Are SGS and TÜV SÜD ISO/IEC 17020 accredited?

Both, for different scopes. SGS states it for its Gulf inspection services, and India's NABCB register lists SGS India (IB 003) with a consumer goods scope covering textiles and garments, leather goods, and furniture, gift articles and handicrafts. TÜV SÜD South Asia (IB 011) is accredited for food, metals and industrial inspection in India. Ask which scope applies to your product.

Does TÜV SÜD do pre-shipment inspection in India?

Yes. Its India pre-shipment inspection page lists in-line, initial production, during production and final random inspection, construction checks and loading supervision, sampling to ISO 2859-1 and AQL, for apparel, home textiles, accessories, toys and hardlines.

Do SGS and TÜV SÜD publish inspection prices?

No. Neither publishes an inspection price on the pages we checked on 14 Oct 2026. Ask both for a written quote for your factory's city, including travel.

Where are TÜV SÜD's consumer goods labs in India?

Its locations page lists a Gurugram lab for food, softlines, hardlines and electrical goods, a softlines lab in Ambur and a food, health and beauty lab in Bengaluru. The Gurugram hardlines lab lists NABL (ISO 17025) accreditation.
