Sandstone paving inspection in India

A sandstone paving inspection measures thickness against the calibrated or hand-cut class ordered, checks sizes and the mix of sizes in each patio pack, taps slabs for lamination along the bedding planes, looks for iron spots and rust veins, and compares colour across crates. Frost, slip and strength results come from a lab on slabs pulled from your stock.

Typical materials
Sandstone in grey, buff, brown, pink and red tones; riven, sawn, honed or tumbled faces; sawn, hand-dressed or tumbled edges
Where it's made in India
Dholpur district, Rajasthan: red sandstone quarries (DC-MSME district profile)
Key rules
EN 1341 with CE marking (EU and GB); ASTM C616 (US contracts); labour due diligence (US DoL list, UK Modern Slavery Act); ISPM 15 crates
Typical AQL
General II; 0 critical, 2.5 major, 4.0 minor, sampled across crates

How Indian sandstone paving is made

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock laid down in layers, called bedding planes. It splits naturally along them, which is what gives riven paving its textured face, and it is also where it can fail. Rajasthan is the source of much of India's sandstone. The DC-MSME industrial profile of Dholpur district records that hills in the west of the district supply quarries of fine-grained red sandstone, and that sandstone production there was 256,325 tonnes in 2010-11 (Mines Engineer, Dholpur, March 2011). The same profile lists a stone park at Vishnoda, Dholpur. India's sandstone exports (HS 2516 20) were US$64.46 million in FY2025-26, and setts, curbstones and flagstones (HS 6801) US$34.58 million (Department of Commerce, TradeStat, provisional); paving is spread over more than one HS code.

Paving reaches buyers in two main forms:

  • Hand-cut riven. Slabs split by hand along the bed, so thickness varies within a range, for example 18 to 30 mm. Edges are hand-dressed. The look is natural and every slab is different.
  • Calibrated. The back is sawn so every slab has the same thickness, for example 22 mm, which makes laying quicker. The face may stay riven or be sawn, honed or tumbled.

Slabs are usually sold in patio packs of several sizes and in single-size crates. Colours are sold under trade names, which are not standards: two suppliers' stone under the same name can differ, so the approved sample is what counts.

What we check on sandstone paving

CheckHow it is checkedWhat fails
ThicknessCalliper at several points per slab; calibrated slabs against the nominal thickness, hand-cut against the agreed rangeSlabs thinner than the range; calibrated slabs varying beyond tolerance
Size and squarenessLength, width and diagonals per sizeShort or out-of-square slabs that will not lay to the joint width
Pack contentsSlabs counted by size in opened packs; area per pack calculatedMissing sizes, short count, area below the stated square metres
LaminationEdges looked at for open layers; slabs tapped with a small hammer, listening for a dull noteLayers lifting at edges, hollow sound, flakes coming away
Iron spots and veinsFaces checked against the sample for brown or black spots and rust linesSpots and veins beyond the agreed level, which can bleed rust once laid
Colour lotSlabs from several crates laid out together against the sample and limit piecesCrates from different colour lots in one order
Face and edge finishRiven depth, sawn or tumbled finish and edge type against the sampleDeep riven steps that trip; saw marks on a honed face; wrong edge type
Crate conditionCrates checked for broken boards, loose strapping and slabs able to moveCrates that will collapse when lifted; slabs rubbing

Natural colour and texture variation within the approved range is not a defect, and the order should say so.

Market rules for sandstone paving

  • EU and GB. EN 1341 covers natural stone slabs for external paving and sets out the characteristics to be declared, such as dimensions and their tolerance classes, flexural strength, slip and skid resistance, abrasion, water absorption and freeze-thaw resistance. The manufacturer issues a declaration of performance with CE marking. The inspector checks the pack labels, the declared thickness class and the documents against the stone. See UKCA and CE marking.
  • US. ASTM C616 is the specification for quartz-based dimension stone. It classes stone as sandstone, quartzitic sandstone or quartzite by free silica content, and sets requirements for absorption, density, compressive strength, modulus of rupture and abrasion.
  • Labour. The US Department of Labor's List of Goods Produced by Child Labor or Forced Labor includes sandstone from India. UK organisations with a turnover of £36 million or more publish an annual modern slavery statement. Regulation (EU) 2024/3015 will ban products made with forced labour from the EU market from 14 December 2027. The inspection records the declared quarry and checks transport and purchase documents; a factory audit adds basic social observations at the processing yard. Neither is a certification of the quarry.
  • Crates. Wooden crates and pallets must meet ISPM 15.

Packing, transit and your purchase order

Paving travels in wooden crates, slabs standing on edge or laid flat, often face to face. A crate can weigh well over a tonne, so timber quality and strapping decide whether it survives forklifts at the port and the yard. Slabs that can move in a crate chip at the corners. Crates packed wet can grow algae and stain the stone. Containers reach their weight limit before they are full; crates must be spread and blocked on the floor. See container loading supervision.

  • Stone and colour, with an approved sample and light and dark limit pieces.
  • Calibrated or hand-cut; nominal thickness and tolerance, or the thickness range.
  • Sizes and tolerance; pack composition and area per pack.
  • Face and edge finish; acceptable level of iron spots.
  • Test reports you need (EN 1341 characteristics or ASTM C616) and on which lot.
  • Quarry declaration and labour due diligence documents.
  • Crate specification, maximum weight per crate, ISPM 15.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between calibrated and hand-cut sandstone?

Hand-cut riven slabs are split by hand, so thickness varies within a range. Calibrated slabs have a sawn back and one even thickness, which lays faster on a thin bed. The inspector measures against whichever you ordered.

How do you find laminating sandstone?

By looking at the edges for open layers and tapping slabs with a small hammer. A sound slab rings; a laminated one gives a dull note. Frost then opens these layers, so laminating slabs are classed major.

Do you test sandstone for frost and slip resistance?

Not on site. Freeze-thaw, slip, flexural strength and water absorption are lab tests. We pull slabs from your stock, seal them and send them to an accredited lab you choose or we suggest.

Is Indian sandstone on any child labour list?

Yes. The US Department of Labor's list of goods produced by child or forced labour includes sandstone from India. Buyers usually ask for the quarry source and back it with due diligence; an inspection records what the supplier declares.

Why are some sandstone slabs spotted with brown marks?

Iron minerals in the stone. Some spotting is natural and accepted on a sample; heavy spots and rust veins can bleed once the paving is wet. Agree a limit in your order.
